Patrick Head, Adrian Newey (now at McLaren) and Frank Williams were scheduled to testify at the Senna Trial today. The first two refused to testify and will give a written statement at a later date. Head said: "I appeal to my right not to answer and reserve my right to present a written statement at a later date." The Williams lawyer stated: "It is quite common it happens all around the world...we eventually concluded that (testifying now) would not add much to our case."

Frank Williams did take the witness stand but stated that the real cause of Senna's crash may never be fully established. He told reporters: "We'll probably never know what happened."

Williams reacted to the claim that Senna's crash was caused by a failure of the steering column by saying: "After a lot of examination...and a lot of simulations, we as a company began to formulate an opinion that the steering column did not break." He did add however that there were doubt about this: "Absolutely...we had doubts. That's why we're here today to try to find out what happened."

Williams refused to comments on the technical side of things: "I occupied myself with the business side of the company." A Williams lawyer also stated: We are not confident that this court is the best environment to discuss the technical intricacies." Williams did state however: "The quickest way to create accidents in Formula One racing is to involve non-experts like me and you in technical decisions."

He did comment on the car: "It was not that magnificent a car. It had quite a few handling problems. It was very difficult to drive."

Frank Williams also said to reporters after the hearing: "I don't fear the future."
