Brazilian Felipe Massa impressed at the wheel of the Sauber at the Italian circuit of Mugello, where the 20-year old made his Formula One debut with the Swiss team on Tuesday.
"The boy's very fast," commented Sauber test team manager Jacky Eeckelaert after European F3000 champion Massa had completed 52 laps with a best time of 1:26.230, only seven tenths of a second slower than Nick Heidfeld's best time, set earlier this season.
Sauber are looking for a replacement for 21-year-old Finn Kimi Raikkonen, who is moving to McLaren to take over from Mika Hakkinen next year.
"This is a small part of the dream that I want to make come true," Massa said. "The team gave me a nice welcome and they've made my job easier. It looked as though I've known them for a long time."
