McLaren Fastest at Silverstone as Franchitti Debuts

Tuesday July 18th, 2000

Several teams resumed testing today at Silverstone, where the McLaren drivers ended fastest of the day - test driver Olivier Panis ahead of David Coulthard.

Testing, however, was not successful for Benetton's Giancarlo Fisichella - his car stopped on his first outlap with a gearbox failure and he was unable to set a time for the rest of the day.

Making a debut in a Formula One car today was Dario Franchitti, seen as a possible replacement for Johnny Herbert in Jaguar next season. Jaguar said the 27-year-old Scot, runner-up in last season's CART series in the United States, spent the morning getting used to the car but still put in a fastest lap only two seconds slower than regular Brazilian tester Luciano Burti.

Franchitti and others are due to continue testing at Silverstone tomorrow.
