Testing in Mugello and Magny Cours- First Day
Only four teams were present today at the French track of Magny Cours: McLaren, Sauber, Prost and Williams. They concentrated mostly on car set-up for the European Grand Prix. McLaren driver, David Coulthard, was the fastest of the day, setting a time of 1:17.58 - some eigh tenth of a second faster than Ralf Schumacher in second. All best times were set today in the morning, as it started to drizzle and the track became too slippery to allow good work with dry tyres. To regain some of the lost time the test was extended to 5:30.
Testing continues tomorrow, at Magni Cours. Today was also the first day of testing at Mugello for Scuderia Ferrari-Marlboro in preparation for the European Grand Prix, to be held at the Nurburgring on 26th September. Both Mika Salo and Eddie Irvine drove today and began by working on setting up their cars. In the afternoon, they had separate programmes: Mika Salo tested new aerodynamic parts, while Eddie Irvine worked on new braking new braking solutions. Irvine did a total of 70 laps with a best time of 1:28.241. Mika Salo did four laps less than his team mate; his quickest being a 1:28.515s. Both drivers continue testing at Mugello tomorrow.
