Alex Zanardi seems set to stay at Williams for the 2000 season, according to media reports in Europe today.

The former CART double champion was rumoured to be leaving the team after a poor performance in the 1999 Formula One season, which saw the Italian fail to score a single point. However, reports claim Williams failed to find a suitable replacement for Zanardi. Furthermore, Zanardi has a contract with Williams for the 2000 season, and it now seems Williams were reluctant to pay him out without a worthwhile driver lined up instead.

Williams refused to comment on the situation until now, but Zanardi's teammate, Ralf Schumacher, voiced his opinion on the matter, saying: "When I hear the names being mentioned as possibles for the second seat, I have come to the conclusion that Zanardi might be by far the best solution."
