Gerhard Berger has broken the record set by Mika Hakkinen in the McLaren a year ago with his Benetton on the Estoril (Portugal) circuit. He clocked a fastest lap of 1m 19.47s. His team-mate Jean Alesi was second with a time of 1m 19.50s. Jacques Villeneuve was third in his Williams-Renault with a time of 1m 19.67s.
Giancarlo Fisichella was again faster than his team-mate Ralf Schumacher.
Olivier Panis is going faster and faster. He broke the fastest lap record set by him on Saturday on the Magny-Cours (France) circuit again today. The Frenchman clocked a time of 1m 13.25s. The pole time of Michael Schumacher of the 1996 Grand Prix of France was a 1m 15.989s.
Panis said: "We've tried a number of things here and it's really beginning to take shape."
