Damon Hill could become the 1996 World Champion this weekend. Hill commented on Monza: "If I learned anything from Monza, it is that God is truly on the side of Ferrari and he also wants me to win the championship. For me to knock myself out of the race and not lose any points was something of a miracle."

Hill said on this weekend: "I aim to get pole position, lead into the first corner and not see another soul for the rest of the race. There are all sorts of views about how drivers should conduct themselves, but I do not have any ambitions to be involved in any sort of questionable tactics. If I am in the lead, I will defend it vigorously, but I do not want to resort to unfair tactics. I believe I can win the race cleanly."
