The Minardi team was testing a new Ford V8 engine, the ED3, at Fiorano (Italy). Pedro Lamy clocked a fastest time of 1:05.80.

Welli Weber, manager of Michael and Ralf Schumacher, is said to be negotiating with the Sauber-Ford team to get Ralf into Formula One.
